“Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition” Meme Set to Burst

Standard

I predict here and now that the “Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition” meme is about to go main stream.

Background and History:

Now this joke is nothing new, from the Know Your Meme page we see that it has it’s origin in the Monty Python’s Flying Circus skit from September 22nd, 1970.

From the google trends data we can see several peaks which line up  with major events in the meme’s history. A peak in July 2004 which results from jiffy pop’s  May 2004 entry of the phrase into the Urban Dictionary. Renewed interest in April 2007 may have lead to chillial uploading this video of the sketches to YouTube in July of the same year. Several other notable events happen in the meme’s history all of which can be read/watched on the above mentioned Know Your Meme page. Finally from the google trends data you can see a gradual increase in the searches over the last few years starting around April 2013.

Why it’s Set to Burst:

Reason the First, with the 11 a.m. update of iFunny on 1/14/17 the second image featured was the following:

Now regardless of your opinion of iFunny it is a daily “meme app” with a base of 10 million+ users. For this reason it is a good indication of where “middle class memers” hold their interest and where there’s interest there should be investment.

Reason the Second, the versatility of the meme. This seven second clip from the original skit can be added to the end of any video such as the To Be Continued meme has been. This will allow the recycling of old videos back into the meme market place thus create new content with minimal effort which is a corner stone of a meme’s viability.

Predictions and Meme Ideas:

I predict within the next two weeks for this meme to go main stream. It will be mixed and matched with the dying Increasingly Verbose Meme to gain initial momentum (we may even see something along the lines of “Nobody Expects Brother to Give Me Öats”).

So if you’re looking to gain views/likes on your meme account or stay ahead of friends on meme trends invest now into “Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition.”
